Variant with variant matching in sales order

Dear Expert,

I need step by step variant configuration customization with variant matching process.

Example:

Configurable Material A (How to maintain this material with process)

Variant Material A1(How to maintain this material with process)

1 (Characteristics)

2 (Characteristics)

3 (Characteristics)

Variant Material A2 (How to maintain this material with process)

1 (Characteristics)

2 (Characteristics)

3 (Characteristics)

If I will put Material A in sales then how it replace by A1 or A2 on the basis of variant matching.

Please suggest  as this is urgent requirement.

Please avoid posting like this.  Lot of documentations are there on VC and all you have to do is search.
