Client export and import queries

Hi Gurus,

We're planning to perform a client export from our production environment, and import it into our qa environment as a new client.

As we all know, three transports will be created. All the cross-client and client specific data, text and forms will be exported.

Can we assume and say that our whole production client data along with configurations, workflow, etc etc will be exported?

And would there be any limitations with client export import?

Cheers,

KS

Hello Keat,

I don't know what the size of your production client is, but a client export/import can be a very time consuming process, since it cannot be executed in parallel.

Usually a quality system is being refreshed with production data using the system copy method.

One of the limitations of this client copy is the data dictionary. If you have different table structures on some tables between quality and production, the import on Q will fail on these tables.

Best is to first execute a testrun via a remote client copy to do the comparison.

Kind regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Our QA system has a number of clients in it, these other clients are being used for various testing purposes. This is one of the reasons we're considering a client export/import.

Is there a way we can compare the table structures between systems? I would like to look into this just in case.

We'll try to propose a test run to see the results.

Hi,

Yes it is possible. In SCC8 you will find RFC system check option. This can be used to compare entire repository

Hi Keat,

Depending on the size of the different clients, it can be even much quicker to export the clients on Q that you would like to retain, perform the system copy (db refresh) and import the exported clients..

But as said, this all depends on the sizes of the clients..

You could also consider a remote client copy from production to quality. This can be executed with multiple parallel processes.

You can check if the structures are in sync by using a test run with remote client copy.

Kind regards,

Mark

Hi Keat,

: Can we assume and say that our whole production client data along with configurations, workflow, etc etc will   be exported?

-- Depending upon the selection of profile, if you select SAP_ALL then YES.

: And would there be any limitations with client export import?

-- There are certain prerequisites you are suppose to follow before you start the procedure and once it over follow the Post-processing activity.

Prerequisites are below :

- Make sure Source and Target systems are running on same support pack level.

- Check for table space in target system.

- Ensure TMS setup is OK and there is sufficient space in TRANS directory.

- Lock all dialog users.

- Ensure no BTCs running.

- There should be no DB lock and no update errors.

Please make sure to perform "Repository consistency check" during Client transport using "RFC System Check" option in SCC8 , this will detect if any inconsistency is there.
