HANA BACKUP Strategy

Does anybody have anything they can share on backup strategies fro HANA appliances ?

As HANA is provided by a hardware partner and it is not recommened to install third party tools on these appliances, how is it possible to, say, copy a HANA backup and its associated log file backups off to an external store for safe keeping ?

I've seen OSS note 1730932 refer to Backint for HANA, which hints at a possibility of a future offering for interfaces into external backup tools, but what about right now ?

The OSS note also has the following information regarding the use of backup tools :

The backup tool has been certified for use with SAP HANA when using the interface that was delivered by SAP.

You have a support contract with the supplier of the backup tool for using it with SAP HANA.

The hardware supplier of your HANA appliance agrees to install and  operate the backup software you require. This is particularly important  if this software is not part of the delivery scope of your hardware supplier.

So it's quite restrictive.

Are people simply copying their HANA backups off the appliance to another server in order to copy them off to tape, for instance ?

I'd be interested to hear what other HANA users are doing right now.

Thanks.

Simon Jackson.

Hi

yes accord. to SAP note 1730932 SAP HANA provides an interface into the future (expected Name: Backint for HANA) ready, which can be used by manufacturers of external backup tools for securing data and redo logs for a HANA system.

So it seems 'BACKINT for HANA' is not released yet - but under development.

Until then HANA DB/log backups can be done to a NFS (to get data away from appliance) and from there be backed up to tape - as you said.
