Distribute Total Float

Dear Experts

My client has a requirement. In a project, for a set of network activities the total float is 60 days but the free float is 0 for all the activities. We use backward scheduling. The requirement is that each activity has to be performed by different department like sales book, execution, shipping closing etc and the total float is to be distributed equally to the activities automatically during scheduling so that every department will have the equal buffer.

Is this possible in standard SAP or if any development is to be done where do we implement the code.

Thanks in advance.

Prakash

Hi,

As you know that either total or free floats in network precedence diagram depends purley on the relationships maintained on them and scheduling type either forward or backward.

Either float to be zeroed then it tends to be fall in critical path zone. As Mahendra stated, do not maintain the relationship so that you wll not have uneven floats.

This situation may lead to uneven scheduling issue like what would if happen if percentage of completion is not planned as expected. In that condition you will not be able to view what would be anticipated or expected completion time of your network. if you have set up configuation as network to detemine dates of WBS then delinking of actitivies will not let you know ETC (Expected time of Completion).

Looking into your business requirements and go ahead you wish to acheive your goal.

Hi,

I think you need to make relationship between the activities according to your business activity which may be sf fs ss ff and then you schedule project,

If you understand float correctly, then it is nothing but the difference between earliest and latest dates.

The float becomes zero when both dates are same. If you wish to keep float for each activity, then one of the option is to not link activities with each other.

Hi Mahendra

Thanks for your time and reply. Actually the requirement is that all the activities will be FS relationship. But we want the system to automatically distribute the total float among the activities without manual intervention upon saving the project by automatic scheduling.

Kindly suggest some logic to achieve this.
