Fall back plan after the upgrade

Hi Basis Expert,

We have completed the HR upgrade in one of our Mock 2 System. The upgrade is done from 4.7 ext set 2.00 to ECC 6.0 , EHP5.

Now we want to test the Fallback plan in Mock 3.

As per plan after the Pre-downtime phase Backup restoration, we would doing Table Cleanup.

As per the SAP Note 417670 - Addnl information on resetting upgrade as of Release 6.10. It is suggesting to execute a report RSUPGRES.

Is this report take the table clean up automatically or do we need to do any manual activities?

If manually than how we will know which table we need to clean up?

Our Fall Back plan is like this

1)Restore Full system backup - Pre-downtime Phase Backup - Recovery Point 1 and Downgrade Oracle 10

2)Table-Clean Up

3)Downgrade the Kernel

4)Restore Upgrade Directory

Regards,

Anil

What is Mock?

There is no general fall back for all cases, you have plans for certain scenarios. To give advice we need to know the scenario.

I give you an example scenario:

- you upgraded the DEV system

- you upgraded the QAS system -> all tests are ok

- while upgrading the PROD system you have an error during the downtime phase and you cannot not solve the problem within your time limit

Then the fall back could be:

- restore the PROD database to the point before you started the downtime

- restore its filesystems (kernel and put directory) to the same time

- resume production on the old release and reschedule a new upgrade date

So basically your plan does not look too bad, but you have to be very careful combining a SAP upgrade with a database upgrade and also a database upgrade and a database restore.

Hi Basis,

Mock mean dummy test system before going to Actual production upgrade .

We have taken backup of production system before going to Downtime phase (suppose we are in end of Pre-processing phase) of EHP5 ECC 6.0

Now form this point onward we want to test fallback plan (in production system).

So ,We have to do Table-Clean Up .

Can you suggest how to go ahead for fallback plan.?

Hm, you usually don't have to fall back at this point, because at the end of the pre-processing phase you are at the end, and if you are there no error happened so far.

The thing is, you have to be very clear on a scenario. Otherwise you are just testing for something that will not happen in reality. This is not necessarily a bad thing, testing something is always a good thing.

But to come back to your requirement. Scenario:

- you have a system with R/3 4.7 and have started the upgrade to ERP 6.05 the upgrade has finisished pre-processing phase.

- you have some unknown issue and want to completely discard the upgrade

Then you would do something like:

- reset the prepare in the Upgrade Gui (if this works)

- (probably) drop the shadow user database schema

- (again probably) run the report from the note, but you have to double check this

- backup and delete the contents of the upgrade directory

You don't have to do anything with the kernel, the kernel will be switched during the downtime and you are not there yet.
