BI Upgrade NW7.0 to EHP1 NW 7.3

Former Member

Hi Friends,

We are upgrading our BI (Dual stack system From NW 7.0 to EHP1 NW 7.3. I have gone through some docs and found we have to split the stack before upgrading. The system have SEM-BW and FINBASIS of release 603..

My questions are

1.  is is it mandatory to split the stack or is their any way we can perform it with out splitting...

2. Can we perform direct upgrade to 7.31 or we have to apply any EHP in the system

3. We also have cluster in production environment, what will be the ideal approach to perform upgrade in production environment.

Please find the current Component details of my BI system

1. You will have to split the dual stack.

Refer the SAP note Note 1655335 - Use Cases for Splitting Dual-Stack Systems

2. You can upgrade directly from NW 7.0 to NW 7.31. Use SUM to do the upgrade . Refer the link

https://websmp104.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700000783082011E

3. In a cluster environment , please make sure you freeze the cluster (stop the cluster service) and bring CI and DB on the same host if they are running on different nodes.

For SEM-BW , refer to link https://websmp209.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700000836252010E

and check page 20. The version of SEM-BW would 6.36 on NW 7.31.

1. You will have to split the dual stack.

This is not correct. It is a recommendation (a strong one a that) but not an absolute must.Upgrades have been done to NW 7.3 retaining dual stack.course Of  it is subject to source release but in this case where NW 7.0 is under consideration dual stack upgrade is possible.Had it been NW 7.03 it would have been a different story.

I also till sometime back thought  that dual stack upgrade isn't possible to NW 7.3 till someone told me that it is and verification shows it is.

I was in the same impression as well , but thanks for pointing this . But the point mentioned in SAP note 1655335 , needs attention which says in NW 7.3 or 7.31 , dual stack split tool cannot be used to split , rather a request has to be made to SAP to provide one. Hopefully they release it in future for such a scenario.

As mentioned in one of my previous reply for SEM-BW , refer to link https://websmp209.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700000836252010E and check page 20. This slide gives an overview of the upgrade path of SEM-BW component with NW AS ABAP.

You will have to upgrade to SEM-BW 604 on NW AS ABAP 7.01, then move to SEM-BW 634 on NW 7.3 and then to SEM-BW 736 on NW AS ABAP 7.31.

In this situation you cannot upgrade from NW 7.0 to NW 7.31 with components FINBASIS and SEM-BW.

Refer these notes

Note 1243791 - FINBASIS 604 and SEM-BW 604: Upgrade to SAP NW AS 701

Note 1539356 - Upgrade to NW 7.3 with SEM-BW, FINBASIS, SAP_BS_FND, WEBCUIF

Note 1681434 - Upgrade SAP SEM 634 NW 730 to SAP SEM 736 NW 731

I suggest you wait till SAP comes back with a reply.

Hi Ratnajit,

Few more question..

1. If I will upgrade system from 7.0 to 7.31 then both the component will be uninstalled and other BW component will be upgrade??

Or It will not allow me to upgrade the system directly from 7.0 to 7.3 itself ??

Or I have to upgrade the system to 7.1 then to 7.31 ??

Thanks,

Satyabrat

I suggest you get the reply from SAP on how to move forward . But as per my suggestion , IT would be a 3 step upgrade in your scenario.

You will have to upgrade to SEM-BW 604 on NW AS ABAP 7.01, then move to SEM-BW 634 on NW 7.3 and then to SEM-BW 736 on NW AS ABAP 7.31.

You if deviate from the above path , may be you will loose components and the upgrade program will bug you in such a scenario.

You cannot upgrade to NW 7.1 and then to NW 7.31.

Thanks Ratnajit,

I am waiting for response from SAP.But mean while I am clearing of my concerns..

you told

"You will have to upgrade to SEM-BW 604 on NW AS ABAP 7.01, then move to SEM-BW 634 on NW 7.3 and then to SEM-BW 736 on NW AS ABAP 7.31."

If this is the case then what should be my approach as I am on 7.0 and how will I upgrade this perticular component

or you mean to say I have to upgrade whole BW system to 7.01 then to 7.3 and then to 7.31.

Thanks & Regards,

Satyabrat

Hi Satyabrat,

Did you get a response from SAP yet about this?  I am doing a similar upgrade and would like to go from SEM-BW 604 on NW7.01 to SEM-BW 736 on NW AS ABAP 7.31.

Can you confirm if we have to do this in two separate steps as suggested by Ratnajit?

Hi Jean,

Yes I got reply from SAP and still the communication is going on.

It is confirmed that we need follow  two step approach for this upgrade i.e. from NW 7.00 to NW 7.01 (EHP1 for NW 7.0) and then from 7.01 to 7.31. and if you have a dual stack system then you have to go with split stack.

Satyabrat

1. Dual stack can be retained during upgrade. SAP  heavily recommends to split it up but you have the option to retain.

2. You can directly upgrade from NW 7.0 SPS05 to NW 7.31. You have SPS17 so it is okay.

However there are notes for FINBASIS and SEM-BW you should check out.

3. Cluster would play a role during downtime. It needs to be disabled (actually the HA). However for more details check the upgrade guides.
