I have 2 distribution channels:
- dsitri01
- dsitri02
Common distribution channel:
- dsitri01 common is dsitri01
- dsitri02 common is dsitri01
I only have 1 division:
- div01
(no common division since I only have one division)
I have 2 customer acct groups:
- cag01
- cag02
I created customer, XD01, under customer account cag01 (with distribution channel dsitri01), no problem.
I created customer, XD01, under customer account cag02 (with distribution channel dsitri01), no problem.
I created customer under customer account cag02 (with distribution channel dsitri02), I got an error.
error: "sales area .... is not defined for customers"
Does this mean I should not use dsitri02 (as distribution channel) if it has common distribution?
What should I do to resolve this issue?
Actually here's what I need to know this time.
If this is your setup:
VOR1
salesorg1 > distri01 > set to common districhannel distri01
salesorg1 > distri02 > set to common districhannel distri01
salesorg1 > distri03 > set to common districhannel distri01
VOR2
- no common division because you only have div01 as the division
Will you be able to create a customer (XD01) with the sales area below?
sales area - salesorg1-distri03-div01

Hello Anwar,
After going through all the replies, I observed that there is misunderstanding about Common Distribution channel/division concept. This feature is actually provided to reduce the master data which is common in nature. Which means, if master data created in sales area which has common(reference) dist.channel OR division, then this master data is applicable to other Dist.channels/divisions which are assigned to Reference(common) Dist.channels/Divisions in Tx:VOR1 & VOR2.
If master data created in reference/common DCs or DIVs then you dont need to create master data again in original DC/Div.
Eg:
salesorg1 > distri01 > set to common districhannel distri01 ---> SA1
salesorg1 > distri02 > set to common districhannel distri01 ---->SA2
salesorg1 > distri03 > set to common districhannel distri01 ---->SA3
Customer 1 created in SA1 is applicable to SA2 & SA3 as well. But still you have to maintain relevant assignments in SPRO settings.
Note: As said above, This feature is to reduce the master data maintenance only, not the configuration settings.
hope it helps

The use of Common Distribution Channel & Divisionhttp://scn.sap.com/message/6607009

I think I got the answer now from the link given by patchala.
rule states that: cannot create master data for referenced distribution channel or division.
so if you have the settings below and you would like create a customer master
with sales area salesorg1-distri03-div01, that will not be possible and will raise error becase that sales
area combination has a referenced distribution channel.
VOR1
salesorg1 > distri01 > set to common districhannel distri01
salesorg1 > distri02 > set to common districhannel distri01
salesorg1 > distri03 > set to common districhannel distri01
VOR2
- no common division because you only have div01 as the division

based on this example image of bojja, I tried the same setup and I do not have problem.
The problem happens when (basing on this image) I setup the common distribution channel to, example 01. If the common distribution is 01, I can no longer create a distribution channel under 10, 20, 30 and so forth and that is what I want to understand why.

Dear Anwar,
Please try to follow the belwo steps:
First thing you have one sales org. two distribution channels and one division
the formula for No. of Sales area is:
Number of Sales Area= No.of Sales org * No. of Distribution channel * No.of Division
1*2*1=2, you have two sales areas
1. Maintain the common distribution channel - VOR1
2 .Maintain the Common division - VOR2
Ex:Common Distribution channel
1. Sales org SO01 -Distribution Channel 01- 01-01
2. Sales org SO01 -Distribution Channel 02- 02-02
Common Division
1. Sales org So01 - Division 01 - 01 -01

You have 2 distribution channel:
- wholesale
- retail
--------
Division, only one: Glassware
--------
VOR1 setup:
wholesale common distribution channel is wholesale
retail common distribution channel is wholesale
--------
With that setup, is it possible to create a customer under retail?
my SD setup is almost like that and I cannot create a customer under retail distribution channel.

hi
please check the VOR1, distribution channel customer/material field, which distribution channel you maintian
sales org d channel division for condition distribution channel customer/material
one whole sale wholesale whole sale
one retail retail retail
two whole sale wholesale whole sale
two retail retail retial
like this you maintain the VOR1 , level ,at then you create the customer at retails distribution Chanel also
check screen
hi
you do not maintain the common distribution Chanel, system no allow the another distribution Chanel in xd01,
SO001 > dsitri01 common is dsitri01
SO001 > dsitri02 common is dsitri01
like this maintain when you create customer for second distribution Chanel , on that time system not allow because you will give common distribution Chanel01 , there two options
one is change common distribution Chanel
SO001 > dsitri01 common is dsitri01
SO001 > dsitri02 common is dsitri02
or assign the distribution channel customer/material like this
distribution channel customer/material
SO001 > dsitri01 common is dsitri01 dsitri01
SO001 > dsitri02 common is dsitri01 dsitri02
like this maintain
you can chose any one ,
done this settings then you create the customer
I have only 2 distribution channels. One is distri01 and distri01.
So here is what I found out after playing with common distribution channel.
When distri01 is setup as the common distribution channel,
I can only make customers under that distribution channel, not with distri02.
When distri02 is setup as the common distribution channel,
I can only make customers under that distribution channel, not with distri01.
When I do not have any setup for distribution channel,
I can make customer under distri01 and distri02.
Is that normal when there is common distribution channel setup?

My sales areas are well setup too. I checked OVXGN already.
I have very simple sales area setup because I only have one sales org and one division.
SO001 > dsitri01 > div01
SO001 > dsitri02 > div01
but still I have problem creating customer.
