SAP Installation (Apps & DB) seperate or consolidated

Hi,

i have a question regarding on how the installation of SAP instances on AIX LPARS should be like.

we have 2 P740 machines (lets call them A & B) with 6 LPARS each.

On P740-A , the first LPAR is for SAP-Apps & second LPAR is for SAP-DB instance.

On P740-B , the first LPAR is for SAP-App-HA & second LPAR is for SAP-DB-HA instance.

my question.. is the above method ok where the Apps & DB is kept on seperate LPARS ?

or should the Apps & DB instances be merged onto a single LPAR ( but on seperate instances)

some of our consltants say that merging is better as it takes away the overhead of the packet moving to & fro the 2 LPARs..

some say keeping them seperate is better as each have their own complications..

any help is highly appreciated..

regards

In terms of simplicity, whats wrong with having one LPAR per SAP system,

i.e. a consolidated instance on each of P740-A and P740-B

This simplifies ongoing maintenance and support for your infrastructure and BASIS teams, by reducing number of systems that require setup and configuration by the hardware / UNIX and BASIS teams thru to the workload (and duration) for any OS / DBMS / SAP kernel patching.

It also simplifies the design (and execution) of the failover from one system to another... for example, if only the P740-A app server failed, causing a failover to the P740-B app server, what do you do, what can you assume, about connectivity to the P470-A DB server (or do you force a failover on on that as well ?).  Running a central instance means each 'component' - DBMS and APP - can access all the resources at one time or another. And of course, in each case you describe, the two SAP instances on each P740 are running on the same physical hardware anyway

Apart from very specific cases (one is mentioned in http://scn.sap.com/thread/1980048), there is no need to separate the system into multiple instances, unless you are physically constrained on resources (i.e. are running on physical servers). In your case (and the same applies to other visualization tools), you will be reducing the overhead of unnecessary multiple LPARs / VM / Containers..

hth

BTW, http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/994025 covers the issue of system-specific data in the environment of virtualized operating system environments for more operating systems than just AIX

Hi,

I always prefer to have SAP Application and DB on separate LPAR's as both will be independent of each other and overhead will be less.

Thanks

Hi Sunny,

what would my argument be with the consultants that haveing them seperate is better.. cause they prefer to have it on the single system..

i know seperate is the way to go but im unable to point out the main advantages or disadvantages of the consolidation
