Please use a descriptive title...

What platform are you talkiing about and what is the scenario you are looking at ?

Usually the systems - be it netweaver come with an inbuilt SMTP service - which if configured properly - you can use to send mails - or even look at mailing sales orders / payslips etc using the same - depending on the scenario and volumes , this varies... please be more specific and give more details..

Brodly there are five steps to configure

1. Profile parameters

2.User administration (transaction SU01)

3. Client assignment (transaction SICF)

4.SAPconnect administration (transaction SCOT)

5. Settings on the mail server (SAP-external configuration)
