NW 7.3 Additional AS instance fails in jstart.exe

Hi,

I have installed one Netweaver 7.3 AS Java standard system server and that one is successfully working.

Now I wan't to install an additional AS instance on another server. But during the installation phase 7 Install instance Basics of J00,

I get error when installation runs the command:

D:\usr\sap\VA4\J00\exe\jstart.exe pf=\\SEVA128\sapmnt\VA4\SYS\profile\VA4_J00_SEVA129 -file=D:\usr\sap\VA4\J00\exe\startup.properties -nodename=bootstrap -launch

The error written to the logfile is:

Error occurred during initialization of VM

java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: com/sap/jvm/impl/lang/StringBuilder

Error occurred during initialization of VM

java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: com/sap/jvm/impl/lang/StringBuilder

Has anyone seen this before?

Hi,

The problem was related to the fact that on primary server I:

1) Installed Base Netweaver 7.3

2) Patched To Netweaver 7.3 SP04

Then when I install additional instance I get an error because I must

Install Base Netweaver.

So correct installation order is:

1) Install Base NW 7.3 on primary server

2) Install NW 7.3 additional server

3) Patch NW 7.3 to SP04 on primary server

can you please copy last 25 to 30 lines from sapinst.log . This can be found in your installation directory.

I am installing it on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit and

using SQL Server 2008 64-bit as db.

Blanca i think the installation is not completed yet. John please correct me if i have understood it wrong. You are still in the process of installing the instance ?

Can you go to the installation directory and find some more files with similar time stamp as that of the error. We can have a look at it. It might give us more information.

NW 7.3 installer actually does not need any external java / jdk references. So the jvm is coming from the media it self. I hope john you used bin mode when doing ftp .

Also check if you see any errors on the windows event viewer.

Hi,

Blanca: Like Amit says, the JVM is part of the installation package of NW 7.3.

            I did the download of the media from SAP Support Portal  and have used it for my primary server without problem.

Amit: I attach some more files from the same date and time that the error occurred.

Hi Amit,

When I view this discussion I can see the attached files to my latest message and if I open the created zip-file they contain a txt file that I can view in Notepad.

Do you know if I have to do anything to make them visible for other users?

Please go through SAP Note

Note 1439013 - SAP Systems based on
SAP NetWeaver 7.3: Windows

Specially,

ABAP+Java, Java: Additional application server installation:

It says,

If  SAP JVM version of the existing SAP system is more up-to-date than the SAP

JVM version on the kernel medium that you use for the additional application

server installation, you may face the problem.

Most likely this is your issue.

Note has given the fix, camly go through that.

Hi Amit and Vishal,

I had to go away on a business trip, so I have not have the time to go through the note.

I read the note and it certainly looks to be applicable, since my JVM has been updated on the primary server. I will try to go through the note during this weekend and see if it works.

I have gone through the note 1439013 and applied the part for SAP JVM, but the original error

is still there.

I have also noticed another interesting thing.. Even though the installation is always failing

it is still creating the instance. But the problem occurs when the Java Instance is starting

Have you updated Kernel
SP level on App Server to the level of CI?

If not, can you please give it a try?
