Hi,
This error might also come if the gateway port is not included in the services file of the destination system.
Please check that.
Thanks,
Sanketh.

Hi Holger,
Thepratically the steps you have mentioned are correct.Anyways let us start the problem diagnosis afresh.
Based on the info you have provided I can safely assume that both the systems are ABAP stack and that gateway service has been started for both the cases. In this case GW service for system B has to be started in any case. If possible please login at OS level in the server hosting server A and issue the command telnet PAS 3300.Let us know the output for that. May be you can first try it from local PC/laptop.
Also have a look at OSS note 581509.

Dear Holger,
Thanks for sharing...!!
I was also gettng same error with return code 242 for DEV to SOLMAN trusted RFC.
The issue is SOLMAN is on Windows Platform and the Windows Platform and Windows Firewall is ON which blocking communication though ping is successful and host entry is maintained.
Your reply helped me to solve the issue.
Thanks...!!!!

Hi Ruchit,
pls. see below.

Holger
Param. Name
gw/timeout
Short description(Engl) Timeout for connect to other gateways
Appl. area Gateway
ParameterTyp Time value
Changes allowed Change permitted
Valid for oper. system All operating systems
Minimum
Maximum 1000000
DynamicallySwitchable
Same on all servers
Dflt value 0
ProfileVal 0
Current value 0
Hi Holger,
The return code 242 made be think it was related to this parameter. However it doesn't look like that But it could also be be related gw/cpic_timeout. What is the value of this parameter? If it is 20 secs (default value) try changing it (this is dynamic parameter) and then do a test connection. I can't suggest the changed value. It is a bit of trial and error method :-). Making it 40 secs might be a starting point.

Hi Ruchit,
did I create the RFC-User and the RFC-destination correctly? Let me tell you the steps which I have done.
I have created a user in the Destination System (Back-end, let's say system B) with user type Communication as RFC User.
In the Front-end System (SRM, let's say system A). I only have created an RFC Destination (SM59) with connection type 3 related to the above mentioned user.
The connection test was made by me in the SRM system (system A). System A is not able to connect to system B in this case.
Are additonal steps necessary???
Regards
Holger
Hi Holgar,
Connection test wouldn't need RFC user. You just need to make sure that hostname and system number of system "B" are correctly input. By the logs I can infer hostname is "PAS" whilst the system number is 00 for system B. Please re-confirm if this is correct.PAS looks more like SID than a hostname 🙂 but then if mel is a valid hostname so can PAS be.. Anyways check this out.Sometimes error in this case particularly wrong system number can throw up this error. If this is fine then I would suggest having a look at gw/cpic_timeout.
Regards.
Ruchit.
