Do i need to maintain different customer numbers if my customer was served by more than one company code.

Ans is No, Even if your customer is served by more than one company code then also you should maitain the same number range for the customer

you can use the same customer different sales areas but u can not use the customer for different company codes.

If you want to extend single customer to Multiple Sales Area the use VD01 Tcode and want to
