Hello,

LSMW is purely a functional Consultant's job & ABAPer is not involved in this. Hope you know about 14 steps of LSMW & that is all what is reaquired to be done.

The challenges a Functional Person may face in more in terms of Data validation. He has to ensure that the Data given by Business people is exactly as per required & he need to put validations in Excel Sheet before asking for Data.

If you are creating BDC instead of LSMW then there is ABAP role here. In BDC a ABAPer records the transaction & then write a Code accordingly to pick necessary data from Excel sheet or flat file & upload in SAP tables.
