Questions, post upgrade

We have just upgraded from 4.6c to nw2004s, ecc 6, and we want to start doing web dynpro for abap. we are looking for information on the steps that are required. specifically, is the java installation required?

What other steps are required to allow us to run the sample apps and start creating our own apps. We tested the functionaility with the sample download, and have enough knowledge of the actual process to be dangerous, but we want to get it set up now in our productive environment.
