Does SAP system automatically detects addition of physical memory?

Hi,

When more physically memory is added to an SAP server, does SAP automatically detects that additional memory (is it reflected in ST06n)? Or do we need to bounce the system to make the additional memory detectable by SAP?

Hi,

SAP automatically detects that additional memory (is it reflected in ST06n)?

If saposcol process is running properly, it will reflect the changes in Available Physical Memory in ST06.

If you increase Physical Memory of the host , where SAP system is running, then only Detecting such memory by ST06 will not be enough. Detected Memory should be distributed to SAP Application Serer / Database for Consumption. You have to reconfigure SAP Memory parameter & Database  Memory Parameters (if both DB & SAP application server is running on same host ..). If only SAP application servers (dialogue instances) are installed on the Host where you have added more Physical Memory, then only SAP Memory parameters will be required to change with optimum distribution for each SAP Instance to consume the additional Physical memory.

If your SAP System is running on Windows Platform and If parameter PHYS_MEMSIZE is in use, then you only need to change this parameter PHYS_MEMSIZE withour adjusting other SAP Memory parameters. PHYS_MEMSIZE calculates and adjusts the whole memory management. If the Host contains both Database & SAP Application Server(s) on the same host then you can take optimum

ratio like 60% : 40% to set parameter PHYS_MEMSIZE. 40% Memory will be given to Database.

I hope the above information will be helpful for better understanding.
