hi,
Title: Oracle Upgrade from 9i to 10g on windows before SAP upgrade.
We are trying to upgrade Oracle from 9i to 10g on windows.
Just one question - I have successfully installed 10g software on a different home while 9i DB was still running (takes just 4 to 6 minutes). Now, i have to install Patch set on 10g software, should i shutdown the database and change the environment variable ORACLE_HOME to new Oracle home before installing the patch set?
Thank you in advance,
Mohan.
Hi Mohan,
Additional information is available in the SAP database upgrade
guide for Oracle "Upgrade to Oracle Database Release 10g Release
2 (10.2)".
This guide describes the preimplementation steps and the
postimplementation steps that are required to apply a patch set,
a patch, or a patch collection. These steps are not described in
this note.
The current version of this guide for Windows and for UNIX is
provided at:
http://service.sap.com/instguides -> Installation & Upgrade
Guides -> Database Upgrades -> Oracle
For more information please kindly refer note 839187.
Thank You.
Regards,
Deepika

Hi Abhishek,
I have seen the Notes suggested by you but iam not getting the answer to my question. You said "Before you install or uninstall patches, you must stop all of the instances and processes that were started from the ORACLE_HOME" , that means the database instance which is currently running is from 9i. So, i dont have to stop it, i should only stop all processes in relation to 10g ORACLE_HOME. Am i correct?
Thanks,
Mohan.
Hi,
You don't need to shutdown your database according to sap document related to oracle upgrade.
download the guide from below location.
https://websmp210.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700000608442010E/win_ora_upgrade.pdf
To reduce downtime you can perform the following steps before you stop your system.
Process Flow
1.You check and set the environment variables .
2.You back up the Oracle inventory .
3.You run the Oracle Universal Installer .
4.You install the current patch set .
5.You install the required SAP bundle patch .
6.You create a symbolic link for the data shared library .
7.You copy and adapt the old Oracle SQL*Net files.

Venkata S Pagolu.
Dear Mohan,
Not just the ORACLE_HOME you should check all the relevant parameters for Oracle 10g as per the following SAP Notes:
830576 - Parameter recommendations for Oracle 10g
556232 - Environment settings for R/3/Oracle on Windows
These notes would help you out.
Best Regards,
Abhishek

Dear Mohan,
Before you install or uninstall patches, you must stop all of the instances and processes that were started from the ORACLE_HOME. On Windows, you must also stop the database services (listener, agent, and DB service).
You can install several Oracle database patches in direct succession without having to restart the Oracle instance after each patch, provided that the patch description does not contain other instructions (for UNIX, see Note 1027012 about MOPatch).
Also kindly refer the following SAP notes:
839187 - Oracle 10.2.0: Applying patch set/patches/patch collection
839182 - Installing patches using OPatch
Best Regards,
Abhishek
