The end of maintenance dates for SAP kernels  are essentially determined by the end of maintenance dates for the OS/DB combinations with which these kernels are produced and released. Since these do generally not match the end of maintenance of the SAP applications that use these, SAP must sometimes create new kernel versions that are then based on more recent OS/DB combinations. Therefore, the 7.20_EXT kernel must be considered as the "successor version" of the 7.20 kernel.

Note that as a result, using a more recent kernel version as part of SAP's extended maintenance may require an upgrade of your operating system and/or database software.

Sap 7.2 Ext can be used as an alternative to the SAP 7.20 kernel and having more similarities and some diferences.
