Interfacing between external barcode scanning and sap

Hi,

Our client would like to introduce scanning of bar code of the material and connectivity to SAP,

I am not understanding that how can we interface to identify the material in SAP though BAR CODE scanning,

Instead of making the manual entries in system while they receiving the goods from the Vendor or some other party they would like to go for BAR CODE scanning system.

Where to configure to consider Bar code values (i.e. Material numbers etc) to make proper interfacing to SAP and integration with other modules as well.

Please help on this issue,
