Mail: error occured: unable to create a socket

I'm trying a mail to mail scenario. I my Receiver communication channel I used SMTP protocol......while executing the scenario i am getting the following error:

Mail: error occured: com.sap.aii.af.lib.mp.module.ModuleException: java.io.IOException: unable to create a socket

what  to do????

how can i check the ports ????  can you please tell me as i am new here

log onto the file system of PI server (unix/windows) and try to telnet the SMTP server or ping it

ya that was a port problem only.....changed to IMAP4 , it worked successfully.............

this is generally when the configurations given are wrong or the ports from PI server are not open to access the smtp server. Cross check these parameters
