Hello Sam

You should download the DVD's and follow the installation guide (links below) to get started.

You can also refer to help.sap.com for information on post-processing (aside from the installation guide and relevant SAP notes).

You run SOLMAN_SETUP after you have finished the installation according to the instructions of the installation guide. Transaction SOLMAN_SETUP will then guide you through the configuration of SAP Solution manager 7.1. Points initial configuration & basic configuration are minimum and afterwards you will also want to configure managed SAP systems. From there on you can implement more features using the options in SOLMAN_SETUP or through the respective workcenters (SOLMAN_WORKCENTER) depending on what you want to implement.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. Is solman installation client specific? After installing solman, do we need to run soman_setup in development client and production client separately? Do we need to configure separately for additional tools available in solman? We are going to implement it freshly so can you guide me what are the best features I have to utilize in solman 7.1?

Regards,

Sam

Hello Sam

You execute SOLMAN_SETUP in your productive client.

There are lots of scenarios and options available for Solution Manager. You first have to know what you want to use and of course how much effort it takes and so on before you can make proper decisions on what  you will implement.

I suggest you take a look at https://service.sap.com/solutionmanager and find out more about Solution Manager so you know what you want to use / are going to use.

The book from SAPPress on Solution Manager is also very interesting in your case.

Normally, from a technical point of view you will be using the Maintenance Optimizer because you need it to be able to download SAP support package stacks (xml generation, download approvals).

You can find more information on the Maintenance optimizer (MOPZ) on https://service.sap.com/mopz.

There are lots of "good" features in Solution Manager 7.1 that can be interesting.

System monitoring is definitely interesting
Self Services and Guided Self Services
Root Cause Analysis
System Recommendations
Change Request Management
Service Desk (Incident Management)

....

Kind regards

Hi Tom,

Now I got a better understanding on solman. I have few more queries. If we didn't configure all features in solman at first installation, can we reconfigure it at a later stage? Do we need to pay any charges for these implementations to SAP?

Sam

Hello,

Please make sure you read note 1577909 and update your Solution Manager 7.1 to SP4 before operating with it. Solution Manager SP0 (the one in the initial release DVD) is not supported.

Hello,

There are no charges on Solution Manager features. You may configure the other features at a later stage.

Hello,

No charges is not exactly correct. It depends on which feature and what type of support you have.

Some features are only available for Enterprise Support customers and for some features under Enterprise Support you still have to pay a license fee depending on the use.

For example Service Desk can be used for non SAP systems which belong to your SAP system landscape. If you want to extend this further to anything within your organization then you have to talk to SAP concerning a cost price.

Kind regards

Tom
