The technical adapters are included with XI, but you have to pay a license fee based on volume for these adapters based upon throughput in your productive environment. So if all you want to do is connect to IDES, I guess there is no cost.

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/0d/5ab43b274a960de10000000a114084/content.htm

- that link contains the default adapters available with XI.

You go in for additional adapters (3rd part adapters) like Seeburger, Redwahoo, iway adapters etc in case the requirement comes in. Say for example you have to connect to a seeburger system then you will have to go in for a 3rd party adapter that provides you that flexibility !!!!

SAP gives standard adapters like http, jdbc, RFC, IDOC, JMS, SOAP for free. You dont have to pay for these. But for EDI stuff you may need to buy Seeburger adapter etc. So, mjaority of stuff is supplied by SAP, you may need to buy the other adapters which are not supplied by SAP.

i dont think that u need to purshase the adapters separatly. if the existing adapters is not satisfying ur req then u may need to write an adapter on ur own or u can get from a vendor. for communicating to non sap systems from ides yes it is possible.
