Unicode: necessary if only operating in European market?

Former Member

Dear colleagues,

I've read quite a few threads on unicode issues but still one questionmark remains. Does it make sense to convert to Unicode if the company is only operating in the european market and there is no likelyhood that it can ever go beyond?

Is it worth the technical effort to convert abaps and so on, if languages supported will only be 2 or 3 from Europe and not elsewhere?

Please let me know your opinion. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

in my opinion, you are getting into trouble without Unicode backends when you want to use more than one part of ISO 8859 like Latin-1 for english and Latin-2 for Central and Eastern European languages, not to speak about Latin-5 for Slavic languages that use a Cyrillic alphabet.

So it depends how big your Europe is

Best regards
