Hi Experts,
I am new to SAP XI and learning XI now. I had few questions in my mind to clarify the same.
1. What are the specific advantages and dis-advantages (if any) by comparing with other EAI products which are available in the market.
2. Explain about the typical phases which we need to follow (as per SAP standard) for any XI project. (like for example.. for OOAD methodology, Requirements, Analysis, Design, Coding etc..etc)
3. Explain about the features of XI 3.0 / PI. With respect to the features, Is there any difference between XI 3.0, XI 7.0 (PI) ?
4. What could be the basic activities or responsibilities of XI Developer, which he/she may need to perform after assigning to any XI project?
Can anybody please answer to above queries.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Sree,
1.
Easy Integration with SAP products & components (RFC, IDOC, Proxy).
Data security as expected from any SAP product.
Standards based - XML, XSD, Xpath etc
Ability to communicate with other messaging systems/products.
Business Process Management
Synchronous & Asynchronous communication possible.
Complex processes for communication possible instead of only sending and receiving (business process management) (connect e.g. asynchronous and synchronous steps, define complex communication scenarios)
Mapping etc possible to accomplish in Java. Platform independent Java components.
Java & .Net support.
Central monitoring.
2. Project phases is always same as general SDLC process or as per the requirement. However you can go to this link for better knowledge about project phases:
I will suggest you that please go through the blog written by Michael which will address maximum of your questions that may be coming in your mind as a XI learner. The link is given in Micael's reply toy your question whose heading is Frequently Asked Questions.

Sree,
1A) Greatest advantage of XI over other EAI tools is integrating SAP with other applications since SAP has delivered lot of content ready to use.
2A) Typical phases would be same for any project, no matter what tool you are going to use. you'll follow the all SDLC phases.
3A) PI 7.0 and XI 3.0 are the same. They just renamed it match it with other Netweaver product versions.
4A) you'll be developing XI interation content(DT, MT, MI, MM, MI) and configuration in Integration Directory.
Hope this helps.

depends what kind of project are you in and what kind of methodology you want to use
>>>>With respect to the features, Is there any difference between XI 3.0, XI 7.0 (PI) ?
none between 7.0 and 3.0
>>>>4. What could be the basic activities or responsibilities of XI Developer, which he/she may need to perform after assigning to any XI project?
if you're a simple developer then you will be involved in developing an interface
from one to another system (mappings, routings etc)
exactly as integration (XI) architect will tell you to
