XI as EDI Translator

Is anybody out there using XI and the Seeburger EDI Adapter as an EDI subsystem for SAP? I'm especially interested in large volume EDI transactions in the retail or consumer goods industry.

We've selected XI and I was hoping that somebody could provide some insight as to what we could expect. Thanx!

We are planning to implement EDI to XI to R/3 but no idea on how to proceed in XI. Does anyone have any idea on how the end to end scenario will be for standard EDI? Are any links or pdf on how to implement this? Are there any step by step documentation or How-to's?

Hi Rajan,

For EDI interface Seeburger has its own Industry Adapters. You can use that. SO usually it will be B2B scenarios.

In many cases, because of security issues, EDI Interfaces will give xml format for the XI and Then it is posted in R/3. Inorder to convert EDI into XML they use some SEEBURGER adapters. If so then you can directly do File->XI->R/3 scenarios. Just like A2A scenarios.

Otherwise you need to go with Industry adapter directly in the XI. and you will be using B2B scenarios most of the time

Hi Moorthy:

Thanks for the valuable info. Is there any way to implement X12 standard format without the use of SeeBurger VAN adapter? In other words, can we use XI within SAP for complete end-to-end EDI-XI-R/3? If we had to go through SeeBurger adapter, is there any documentation for we need for R/3 installation of this adapter?

There are a couple of other options you can consider, although SEEBURGER seems to be the established player right now. The other options may not be as rich for the overall EDI message-exchange process.

SAP Conversion Agent is a new component of XI written by Itemfield that will parse out EDI transaction sets into XML that's usable in XI. Their tool maps unstructured data (such as packed EDI messages, or PDF documents, or...) to/from XML. The runtime component is an adapter module deployed on the J2EE WebAS, and configured in the communication channel. (The unstructured mappings are created with a separate GUI.) Itemfield reported that they already have the mapping content available to parse out the complete EDI transaction sets into XML.

SAP endorses it for mapping unstructured data -- Paul Medaille, SAP's product manager for XI gave a presentation on it at ASUG Orlando, and it's actually tied in to the SAP online help for XI now.

You still need the adapters. For connectivity, iWay offers some EDI connectivity adapters for XI (sold and supported through SAP), but they don't have as many native-XI EDI connectivity options as SEEBURGER. You can also install iWay's adapter framework to run iWay's non-XI adapters to push the data to XI. Their framework is likely to cover the entire gamut of protocols (they have some 300 adapters), and is supported on NetWeaver.

One key to think about is these alternatives would require you to custom-develop the 'process' around your EDI transactions.

Disclaimer: I haven't seen these alternatives to SEEBURGER in action.

Hello Emmanuel,

we implemented XI 3.0 with Seeburger EDI for automotiv. At the beginning we had some problems with the xsd from Seeburger, but after we had solved this problems with Seeburger, the implementation works fine.

Now we have only some problems with the monitoring. Sometimes in SXI_Monitor the messages look good, but if you check the messages in the Runtime Workbench there are errors.

To improve the monitoring, we plan to upgrade to the latest SP of XI 3.0 and try to configure the alert inbox in the RWB.

I hope this post is helpful for you!
