System Copy - Server Names

Former Member

Hi,

We are installing new servers. I am preparing to perform a system copy to the new servers. However, we have a few custom configurations for the transport system, some programs reference the server name, etc. Is it possible to simply install a server with the same name (off the network) and restore the database and copy over the \sapmnt folders, and other folders, configure it with the same IP address, then shut down the old server, and bring up the new one on the network?

This is with SQL 2000 and Win2003 OS...

TIA,

Jason

If you are doing a local installation this would be possible.

But performing a domain installation (and thats what we normally would recommend) you need to add two servers with the same name and IP address in the domain. I don't think that windows will allow that.

Moving a local installation to a domain installation is not recommended at all.

Peter
