Unable to initialize ASPI manager error

We are using SDLT 320 internal tape drives for backup. We seem to get random failures with the following error block in the log:

BR0278E Command output of 'dd bs=32k conv=sync if=G:\ORACLE\L03\SAPDATA1\BTABD_10\BTABD.DATA10 of=/dev/nmt0':

dd: unable to initialize ASPI manager

dd: using NT tape support

dd: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

dd: write error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

28434+0 records in

28433+0 records out

1 write error

dd: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

BR0280I BRBACKUP time stamp: 2007-01-17 19.08.42

BR0279E Return code from 'dd bs=32k conv=sync if=G:\ORACLE\L03\SAPDATA1\BTABD_10\BTABD.DATA10 of=/dev/nmt0': 1

BR0222E Copying G:\ORACLE\L03\SAPDATA1\BTABD_10\BTABD.DATA10 to/from /dev/nmt0 failed due to previous errors

We track the tapes through a tape log, we have had the drives replaced (the latest one to die was replaced the week of Jan 8 and the error returned this week) and I keep the firmware and drivers up to date on the SCSI card (Adaptec) and the drive. We are running Windows 2000 Advanced Server with the latest Win 2K service pac. We have 4 servers with tape drives and some of the servers seem to have a greater disposition to this error than others. We run a 20 day rotation and we do not run 24/7 but there is no apperant pattern that we have been able to detect in the failures on any of the 4 systems.

Doing a Windows Backup does not seem to generate the problem. I have run two or three Windows backups and then have the first SAP packup fail. These are all Dell PowerEdge systems and are rock solid otherwise.

We are out of ideas and we are hoping someone else has encountered this and has found an answer.
