There is a third party tool from Sybit called Model Tester. This tool is specifically tailored to testing configuration models. It can be used for checking conflicts, dependencies, bom explosion, and pricing. So you can do automatic regression testing etc.

Adding to this it should be maintained that the material should possess the classification tab in the material master.
and also u have to maintain what characteristics r to be taken into consideration from the material master.
By this u can select the required characteristics for ur material (product).
