EP Vs XI in Net Weaver!

Hi,

can any one here explain me the basic integration difference between portal and exhange infrastructure?

i just gone through the help site of SAP and some other documents only to find that portal is "people integration" and XI a "process integration"

if all processes are integrated, i feel the people associated with also be automatically integrated.More over the concept is not clear to me.can any body explain me in Brief why these two are seperate dedicated systems?
