If you want to use one of the adapters that come pre-installed with XI then you don't have to write any code. But if you want to do something that requires a custom adapter then you have to write it yourself in Java

No, you dont have to write code for using the adapters. You just need to configure them. But some times the prebuilt adapter may not suit your requirements, then you may need to create a custom adapter which requires java coding.
