Hi Ashraf,

You can delete the file in UNIX even if the file is open.

After deletion you should then restart the work process 23 from SM50.

On Windows the system may complain that the file is open, however I cannot confirm that at this moment cause i don't have access to any windows SAP servers.

If windows does not complain you can go ahead and delete it, however make sure you restart the process in SM50.

Also,

As sachin has mentioned earlier, please check the trace file before deleting if you are on UNIX you can simply check by tailing the end of file continuously.

tail -f dev_23

On windows there is no such utility.

Dear Ashraf,

this can be done from transaction SM50, Process->Trace->Reset->All files. You can also use the profile parameter

rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING = on, <size>m

to restrict the trace file size. dev_w*.old files can be deleted without any problems. A restart would not have been necessary.

Tim

Hi Ashraf,

As mentioned by others, is this Windows or Unix? Is there repeating entries when viewing the file contents at OS level?

Note #112 has information about reducing the trace level to 0 before removing contents of trace file for the relevant PID.

The parameters 'rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING' can be used to limit trace file sizes to a certain amount also as in notes #112 and #396750.

Thank you for your valuable replies.

I restarted SAP. The file became .old. Then I deleted it.

Server is Solaris 9/ Oracle 9.2 / R3 4.71

Hi Ashraf,

Glad to hear that the problem was resolved. You can always restart the instance so that dev_w* files become dev_w*.old and can be deleted if too large.

Please award points if you found any answers useful for how to delete a trace file when the instance is still running as in the Rules of Engagement.

Hi,

This is developer trace file for workprocess no 23, as you said the size of the file is 1.7GB, that means there might be some continious warnings or errors which are incresing the log file size.

You will be not able to delete this file as it will say the file is use if your system is running. to delete this file you need to stop your SAP R3.

Best Regards,

Sachin.
