A wiki is a open collaborative environment were everyone can edit documents as well as read them. It is like the website you can edit.
Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that is open and everyone can edit. Wikipedia
They are good for collaborative groups around a common interest. PHPLondon is a good example of this.

Trac is a software management tool that has Subversion source control, a wiki and issue tracking system.
Wiki's work really well in this context because the documentation is easy to create and easy to modify but it has the advantange of revision control.
You can add content really easily and also roll it back if required.
They do have problems with spam as automated attacks can enter content, but the disadvantages are far outweighed by the advantanges.
Hope this helps,
Nigel
