Iam working as a ABAP consultant.
Iam planning to learn sap-xi. what is xi. why we are using xi.
What is the future of xi and why?

Welcome to XI. Having knowledge of ABAP will be an added advantage for you while doing some mapping.

For ABAPer's XI is a good option & easy to learn. In short XI is
XI is used to provide a single point of integration for all systems,SAP&non SAP,inside and outside the corporate boundary.
XI supports B2B as well as A2A exchanges; supports synchronous and asynchornous message exchange; and includes a built-in engine for desinging and executing integration process
An important feature of the XI is it provides openess and transparency to the integraton process
SAP Netweaver is the integration and application platform for mySAP solutions; XI represents the process integration layer of the Netweaver stack and is a crucial element of the Enterprise Services Architechture (ESA)
The overall key concept of the SAP Exchange infrastructure is to drive integrated business process across heterogeneous and highly dynamic IT landscapes in more manageble and cost effective way.
With SAP Exchange infrastructure and collaborative business, SAP approches the integration challenge from a different angle. The basic idea is to provide a runtime infrastructure which allows heterogeneous systems to be tied together with fewer connections and at the same time, inorder to connect those applicatioins and let messages flow from one application to other, have a centralized storage of the integration knowledge.
XI is open & flexible, it uses web standards such as Web services description Language(WSDL), XML Schema Definition Language(XSD), and SOAP messaging for describing object and communicating with other systems.
XI is not a single component, but rather a collection of components that work together flexibly to implement integraion scenarios.

SAP Exchange Infrastructure (SAP XI) enables you to implement cross-system processes. It enables you to connect systems from different vendors (non-SAP and SAP) in different versions and implemented in different programming languages (Java, ABAP, and so on) to each other. SAP Exchange Infrastructure is based on an open architecture, uses open standards (in particular those from the XML and Java environments) and offers those services that are essential in a heterogeneous and complex system landscape:
● Modeling and design of messages, transformations, and cross-component integration processes
● Configuration options for managing collaborative processes and message flow
● Runtime for message and process management
● Adapter Engine for integrating heterogeneous system components
● Central monitoring for monitoring message flow and processes
SAP XI supports internal company scenarios and cross-company scenarios.

XI is the techology and plot form for integration of SAP to SAP ,SAP to NON-SAP,B2B,A2A and cross component BPM.in other words you can use XI to integrate hetrogeneous applications .ex: if you would like to create IDOC using a file who doesn't have SAP,that could be possible.as it integrates all A2A and B2B,definately furture will be grabbed by XI.
