Anyway, to start with a basic example try the IDOC scenario from help.sap.com <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/2a/6efd3f9149ca42e10000000a1550b0/content.htm">link</a>
I know it works on the VU system. I can send you a document with some specific settings for the VU system if it is you.

note that some preliminary settings are required in case of IDoc scenarios;
you need to do the following:
In XI
SM59 - R3 connection pointing to R3
IDX1 - define the port with the above dest.
In R3
SM59 - R3 connection pointing to XI
WE21 - define the port with the above dest.
WE20 - Partner profile type outbound/Inbound
