This is interesting question and I do not think there is generally correct answer.

In my opinion for SAP Basis you need like following skills (depends on your working environment):

80% SAP skills

9% OS skills (window/linux/unix/etc.)

9% DB skills (oracle/mssql/db2/maxdb)

2% other IT skills (network,etc.)

But like I said - everything depends on your working environment - if you work in a big company that has separate specialists for DB and OS (example above) - than you can more focus on SAP. If you work in a small company running your one-man-show you need to be pretty good in all aspects (double all non-SAP skills).

As a SAP Basis admin you will most of the time solve SAP problems, but soon you will realize that many SAP problems has their roots in OS or DB problems - that is why you need to have skills in OS and DB as well.

How to start? From my experience I would suggest:

- SAP Administration made Easy (really good for small business admin) - I like this book

- official SAP course documentation/participation (ADM100) - really very good, but I suggest to read something about SAP before - this way you will get maximum from this course

- other SAP courses (ADM102, ADM505 for oracle or other course for other type of db)

Please award points for useful answers.

Thanks
