Hi Guys,
I am cvurrently on a project at the moment and am getting completely comfortable with all of the tools of SAP XI.
The problem I fear I will face in the future is the fact that here, they already have everything done through webmethods so their is no need to gather specs etc which I know will be needed on other projects.
I was wandering if someone could give me an example of how you would gather all of the the relevant information in order to start a brand new implementation. Things like where would you find what fields needed to mapped from IDOC to EDI and visa versa.
Is there a methodology to do this? and specific transactions to find this information.
Also could someone be kind enough to email me some examples of what a technical specification looks like. i.e. for the mapping, adapeters etc
Thank you in advance

OK I spoke to a friend of mine yesterday and he said that different projects vary but 90% of the time at the very minimum I would be given the source structure.... The Target structure and tole which fields map where. The only thing that may not be included are the things like the functions to use to achieve the result. i.e. Ifwithoutelse etc.
Would you guys agree that at the very least I would be given the structures and told what fields are meant to be mapped and to where?
Also Please Please Please.... Could someone send me an example of the documentation used on projects... i.e Functional Spec, Technical Spec, Proof of concept. Please this would really help me.

Ok_ I am getting the hang of this now
So Functional consultants will write a light tech spec.... Then I would have to go and look at the documents he/she is specifying and figure out which source field maps to which target field and any qualifyers are involved.
To do this would I get a hard copy of each document? How would I do this? I promise this is my last question then it will be solved
Also could any of you be kind enough to send me a technical and functional spec that you guys have received or done in the past. Please please please

Ok thank you... So you guys are saying that often it is the business consultants who will come up with the functional AND Technical Specs and it is the XI Consultants job to implement these? Is that correct?
In the case where I would have to do the specs is it just a case of speaking to the users finding what documents they use.... Speaking to the business partners/Clients finding what they send and receive and making sence of it that way?
Would I use transaction WE60 to help with this

>> Ok thank you... So you guys are saying that often it is the business consultants who will come up with the functional AND Technical Specs and it is the XI Consultants job to implement these? Is that correct?
For me... Business consultants provide only a functional specs and a light technical spec with the format (see my previous message). And XI developers write the technical specs with all created XI objects.
>>Would I use transaction WE60 to help with this
Only when you exchange data by using an IDoc. It's often the case for the ECC-R/3 side... For the other one, you can see the SAP HELP of Adapters

Thank you for your quick response. So are you saying that it is not the job of the SAP XI Developer to define the Mapping?
If I wanted to define the mapping, scenarios etc where would I get that info from. Are there transactions that help with this. How would you get the specs?
Also I tried the link for the template documents and you require a user name and password. How do I obtain this?
Sorry to be such a pain I just want to prepare my self
Also could you maybe email and example of a technical specification that includes mapping, integration scenarios etc.
Pretty Please

Hi,
So are you saying that it is not the job of the SAP XI Developer to define the Mapping?
>>Mapping rules are given by business requirement. i.e which field of file should match Idoc field etc. actual design/development is done by XI consultant. But any inputs are given to Functional/business people
If I wanted to define the mapping, scenarios etc where would I get that info from. Are there transactions that help with this.
>>No transactions-
You can go thru this demo so that you can find many realtime scenarios-
https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/docs?rid=/webcontent/uuid/110ff05d-0501-0010-a19d-958247c9f798#xi [original link is broken]
In my previous reply, i mentioned some of the threads- It has all the formats required + content required to do the Tech Spec.. It will take time to read..

Hi Alex,
>>So are you saying that it is not the job of the SAP XI Developer to define the Mapping?
Normally, it's functional consultant who give you the rules to be mapped between source and target structure. But it's not always the case, it depends on how you work on your project.
>>If I wanted to define the mapping, scenarios etc where would I get that info from. Are there transactions that help with this. How would you get the specs?
Not at my knowledge. Each project has its specs. Often you have two docs:
- functional spec which describes the functional rules and the impacted systems, and sometimes the attempted structure: file, idoc, web service, database, etc...
- technical spec which describes what you (as a XI developer) has realized in order to do it: ALE configuration (admin), mapping, Data Type, BPM, etc...
>>Also I tried the link for the template documents and you require a user name and password. How do I obtain this?
For this template given by Khrishna, https://sdn. It's your SDN logon !
