Hello,
I am trying to figure out whether its possible to replace some of our 3.x BW Web Applications with VC Components. There are a couple of basic functionalities that we use and I can't figure out how to do them in VC... We are using BW 3.5 and Portal Netweaver 2004s (SP8 I think)
1) Dynamic Table Layout - Simple Example: The user can choose if they want to view by business unit or by region and the table layout will change to reflect their choice (aggregated to the correct level of course). I know that I could simulate this using multiple queries and multiple tables, but that is not very maintainable.
2) Text Variables - We've got lots of cases where we use Text Variables inside of column names in our queries. For example, we have a query that shows "current year sales vs. either prior year, forecast or business plan". We use a multi-provider that contains a cube for each 'version', and change the 'compare-to' column by filtering on InfoProvider and passing a user friendly column name through the Text Variable, for example &ZT_VERSION& Sales, which would translate into 'Forecast Sales'. I know we could probably do something tricky with a formula defined for the column label, but that seems like reinventing the wheel since the text replacement functionality is already built into the query.
3) Multi-step Command-URLS - Most often, our web apps use a single query which is modified extensively using many command-URL's. We might take the base query and then filter both characteristics and keyfigures, change layout, sort, create dynamic conditions, etc. before rendering the query into the Table Web Item. The only examples of using the webapi functionality that I've been able to find are very simple. Are there any examples of doing any more complex transformations on the queries; are there any limitations of the webapi field that we will hit?
4) Display Rows/Columns as Hierarchy - Many of our guided analytics dashboards display the information in a hierarchy using the native BW 'Display Row as Hierarchy' capability. The users have the ability to choose their drill-path (for example region/plant/customer/product or product family/product/customer, etc) and then the layout of the query is set (see #3) and the user can drill from the high level down to the low level. I've seen the blog on how to drill through a real hierarchy, but can't figure out how to extend that to the multi-characteristic 'Row Hierarchies' that we use. Is there anyway to do this?
Thanks in advance for any help; we are still trying to get a sense of Visual Composer's capabilities and limitations as well as its place in our development toolkit.
1) you can do that with the option that you mentioned, but it's definitely not convenient.
2) Currently not supported
3) There should be no limitations. Still you have to know exactly what you are doing and - just as a reminder - with BI 7.0 the WebAPI is deprecated (though still working)
4) Not possible, also not possible is hierarchies in columns. The current table control is not flexibel enough
You should consider VC at the moment not as a tool to replace BEx, but as a tool to overcome limitations of BEx, like integration multiple sources (BI, JDBC,...) and transactional data (RFCs, Web Services) into one application.
