I am trying to install WAS Sneak preview and I am getting the following error. My company policies would not let me change the name of the system. Is there any way i can pass through this problem? Let me know if some one can help me resolve this issue.

ERROR 2005-01-05 15:45:47

The name of this host is rkw5y28ksqzw010 which is more than 13 characters long.
This is not supported for SAP server installations (see SAP Note 611361).

No way you need to change the host name. Max you can maintain 13 characters.

Hello,

You could install a virtual machine on your machine and do the installation in the virtual enviroment.

Microsoft has a free virtual machine.

Kind regards,

Hello,

Attempting to replying to a pretty old thread, just because its still not marked as answered.

Even I faced a similar issue and it got resolved when parameter SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME was set to <abcd> where the full host name is <abcd.companyname.net>

Hello all,

FYI, note 611361 walks through this issue:

SAP specific restrictions:
For hostnames of servers running SAP software the following additional
restrictions must be obeyed:

o Maximum length of the hostname:

up to 13 characters for SAP rel. 4.6 or higher

up to 8 characters for SAP rel. up to 4.5

o Due to a problem in the installation routine, the host name of
computers running Microsoft Windows must not begin with S-[0-9]
(e.g. hostname S-12345 is not allowed). Please see SAP note
       998631 for further information.

o When using Oracle on Windows see note 849423 for restrictions.

o Hostnames must be considered "case sensitive". That means
hostnames shall be used in the same case (upper or lower) in all
SAP configurations as well as in the network configuration (DNS
or etc/hosts). You must ensure consistent name resolving of the
hostname from hostname to IP address and back from the IP address
to the the same hostname (case sensitive match). See also note
       129997.

o On multihomed hosts the hostname must be assigned to the IP
address of the primary network interface. See also note 21151.

Best regards,

There is no workaround to this issue. 13 characters is the limit. You will have to contact your networking team to adjust the server name to something less than 13 characters. SAPINST will not work around this issue.

Sorry - but we've hit this issue and explored the options.

Unless someone knows a good trick then you are out of luck. The hostname which will be key to working with the system has to confirm to standards.
