I'm new to XI, coming from a mainframe developer background and I can see application for ABAP or JAVA skillsets.
If I needed to concentrate on picking up one skill or the other, which would it be. I've made some mods to ABAP report program for creating non-standard Idocs out of SAP but it looks like a lot of non-graphical interface mappings are done with JAVA.
Hi Mark,
most coding in SAP is written in ABAP. All the coding of the core components reside on the ABAP Stack.
If you can ABAP, this is your entry to nearly all coding, not only ABAP-mapping.
I guess it will take a long long time is SAP develops its components in JAVA.

My personal view .... go with what u r comfortable with !! but then a knowledge of both makes you a complete XI guy
