Impact of setting PROCTIMEOUT in icm/server_port_0

Dear Sirs,

We experienced some timeout issues with internal ITS (IAC programs). The timeout happened after 60s, by note 885580 Integrated ITS: Configuration parameters and Note 705013 - Timeout for ICF services based on ITS, we identified that by increasing the PROCTIMEOUT in parameter icm/server_port_0 we were able to avoid the timeout. I set the PROCTIMEOUT to eight minutes.

I wonder if increasing this PROCTIMEOUT from default 60 has any negative impact on the system? (e.g on other internet services, e.g BSP?, on system resources)

Or is it considered a safe parameter to increase?

Hi Jorgen,

of course this setting has an impact on system performance and ressources. When you increase the timeout, more data will be help in memory, so you've to monitor the system and see where to define the best value for the timeout.

Hello Pascal,

are there any rules of thumbs on this issue, "e.g a doubling of proctimeout will result in a doubling of memory usage".

Or are you able to quantify how an increase from 60seconds to 420 seconds will impact the system, or is just to many variables so monitoring is the only way.

Hi Jorgen,

there's no rule of thumb, because every application is different, also the users behaviour...

- every user needs an initial amount of memory while logged in (user context

- then there comes the amount of memory while working with the application

- then it depends if when for example a query is finished the memory gets freed up or if it will be held in memory

- the behaviour of the user if he logs out correctly (memory is freed up) or just closes the browser (memory still in use until timeout occurs)

So the best would be to simply monitor your system with SM04, there you can also click on GOTO -> MEMORY and you'll see the amount of memory for each user. Look what happens when a user works with the application and also what happens when a user closes the browser.

Pascal
