The Oracle 11g Database Upgrade Guide for UNIX / Linux can be downloaded from the SAP Service Marketplace.

Is SLES 11 going to support oracle 11g?

Yes

Hi, Venky

Currentlt in our PRD setup its having DB server (2 servers in cluster) 4 Application servers and Clustered CI server

In all these servers, oracle instant client is installed

/oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient

So if we upgrade oracle 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.x, do we need to install the relevant oracle instant client on all the servers?

Currently, BR*Tools 7.00 is located in /usr/sap/<sid>/SYS/exe/run

Do it requires to update all the locations in every server (one by one) to the new BR*Tools verions (ex: 7.20)

Hi Zerandib,

Yes, Download the 11g Client as described in the following note.

Note 819829 - Oracle Instant Client Installation and Configuration on Unix

Currently, BRTools 7.00 is located in /usr/sap/<sid>/SYS/exe/run*

Do it requires to update all the locations in every server (one by one) to the new BRTools verions (ex: 7.20)*

Yes, of course. You might NOT have to do this if the kernel directory /sampnt/<SID>/exe or /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run is shared across SAP apps and Database nodes.

hi Venky,

Thx for the clarification

Further, Is the BR*Tools directory and the Kernel directory same?

If so, is that implies brtools is part of kernel or such

Is BR*TOOLS upgrations and kernel upgrade same

Coz, in this path /sampnt/<SID>/exe or /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run , it also having these files as well

(brbackup,brconnect,brarchive,brrecover etc)

I have checked out application servers, it has the both locations.

Path1:> /sampnt/<SID>/exe and Path2:> /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run;

Since it having both Wht is the effective path? (either path1 or path2)

Hi,

Ideally yes, as per Standard SAP installation. BRTools should be in kernel directory /sapmnt/<SID>/exe

BRTools need not be upgraded as a part of kernel upgrade. But, it is upto your choice to do so. But, it is always better to perform BRtools ugprade since you have backward compatibility anyway.

Coz, in this path /sampnt/<SID>/exe or /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run , it also having these files as well

(brbackup,brconnect,brarchive,brrecover etc)

I have checked out application servers, it has the both locations.

Path1:> /sampnt/<SID>/exe and Path2:> /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run;

Since it having both Wht is the effective path? (either path1 or path2)

Path1: Common Shared Kernel Directory

Path2: Instance specific kernel directory

Read about sapcpe. This program copies the kernel files from Path 1 to Path 2 EVERYTIME when sap starts.

So, kernel upgrade should be done for Path 1.

All brtools will be with ownership ora<SID>: dba

-rwxrwxr-x 1 orabdp dba 1578637 Feb 20 2009 brrestore

-rwsrwxr-x 1 orabdp dba 2303924 Feb 22 2009 brtools

-rwxrwxr-x 1 orabdp dba 4178065 Feb 24 2009 brarchive

-rwsrwxr-x 1 orabdp dba 4284895 Feb 24 2009 brbackup

-rwsrwxr-x 1 orabdp dba 5527676 Feb 24 2009 brconnect

-rwxrwxr-x 1 orabdp dba 4587371 Feb 24 2009 brrecover

-rwxrwxr-x 1 orabdp dba 5679668 Feb 24 2009 brspace

Change of ownership is done by the script oraroot.sh after the kernel replacement during kernel upgrade.

Hi Zerandib

Plan looks Ok as far as you have gone through the notes and documentation as you are upgrading OS (Point # 1).
