How to identify whether the user login for the first time

I have an requirement to identify the user login data i.e, to identift the user who login to the portal for the first time.

how can i achieve this please help me in this to achieve...

create custom attribute on UME user profile and custom login module. In login module set that custom attribyte to true by login.

Thanks for the reply i will try it and do we have any other option because for the custom attribute creation we need server restart.
