Hi All,

We will be upgrading the oracle from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3. I have done upgrade from 9.2.0.7 to 10.2.0.2 But need to know is there any diffrence between the two.

Do we need to use DBUA to upgrade from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3 or there is any other process is 11g?

Request you to reply.

Thanks

You do not need to use DBUA to update Oracle from 11.2.0.2 and 11.2.0.3 . Its just a patchset installation for Oracle 11.2 .

This is actually a binary upgrade of oracle . Your database dictionary is not going to change ,hence you do not need to run DBUA.

Follow these notes to help yourself .

Hi All,

As per SAP Note 1524205 - Oracle 11.2.0: Database Software Installation, to upgrade the oracle software from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3 you have to run ./dbua.sap.sh.

But now the replies given above seems to be conflicting with each other.

Can somebody please confirm whether

we need to run dbua.sap.sh to upgrade the oracle from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3.

Request all to clear my doubts.

Thanks

Deepak

Hey Deepak,

i am wondering from time to time how such replies can be in the top contributors list ... scary.

@Ratnajit Dey: Have you ever heard of the script catupgrd.sql? Do you know what it do? It seems like not.

@Deepak: Starting with 11.2.0.2 SAP uses the out place upgrade procedure and the patchset upgrade itself is done with dbua. You can also do it manually (for details check metalinknote #1276368.1), but that is not the official SAP way.

Hi Stefan,

Thanks very much. This is very helpful ans. and i will assign points for the same.

As i understood it. the mail points are

1) We need to follow out of place upgrade where we should create a new oracle home for 11.2.0.3.

2) Install the new oracle software i.e. 11.2.0.3

3) From new home we need to execute the dbua

4) Perform post activities.

But we should follow the SAP process of upgrade where sap uses the scrip which is mentioned in above in my message.

Can you please confirm the main steps given above are OK ?

Thanks

Hi Deepak ,

Please follow SAP Note 1524205, thats the correct info. I was mistaken . You need to run DBUA .

Sorry for making you confused .

@Stefan : Thanks Stefan for making me realize the mistake ...

Hey Deepak,

yes your procedure is correct (apply the current SBP to the new ORACLE_HOME after step 2).

The script dbua.sap.sh (by SAP) is just a wrapper for dbua which runs some pre-/post scripts and dbua itself.

Hi Deepak,

Oracle 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3 can be done by patchset installation.

At some point, you have to use dbua for upgrading the database.

You can either refer to the readme file in the patchset zip file or Oracle documentation.
