Dear All,

Can you help me with timescales for the following components, which is part of a major upgrade project ? I have searched on the marketplace, SDN and various other places, but can't find a definitive answer

- I am looking to upgrade *Oracle from 9.2.0.4 to Oracle 10.2.

- Our current OS is *Windows 2003* which has to be upgraded to *Windows *2008 (Release 2).

- Also we are using R/3 Enterprise 4.7 110 and we are looking to upgrade to ECC6.

This information is to be gathered and then sent to a customer, who is interested in the upgrade.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks and Regards,

Johnny.

Hi

1-2 Months should be sufficient for such upgrade if hardware upgrade is not involved.

Oracle 10.2 - Support period is over ..u will have to plan Oracle upgrade to Oracle 11

Also, Check Note 1476239 - SAP system migration to Windows 2008/2008 R2

If you run an SAP system on Windows Server 2003, you cannot simply upgrade your Windows Server 2003 operating system to Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Instead, you have to copy your SAP system running on Windows Server 2003 to another server running on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Vijay, Thanks for the reply.

If I say the system is going to be upgraded from 32 bit architecture to 64 bit architecture. .

Would anybody be able to provide me with a breakdown of time required to upgrade the following-

Medium Hardware Requirements (CPU, memory, Page File, Buffer size) :

SAP 4.7 to ECC6 :

Oracle 9.2 to Oracle 11g :

Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 (R2) :

I take on board the recommendations for Windows, given in your first response.

Any assistance from anyone is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Johnny.

Hello,

OS-Hardware migration and database upgrade may be done within 1-2 weeks if you have everything in place.

SAP upgrade planning and preparation take longer time as compared to actual upgrade.

You may either open a message and seek a roadmap from SAP or use your Solution manager system.

Please check the following links:

http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/4010cb98-45ed-2c10-13be-ceb77a4911b2

https://websmp105.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700003618582003

Upgrade experiences:

https://websmp107.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700000588112007E

The timelines varies for each customer due to various factors such as database size, modules used, business complexity,

unicode conversion decision and so on.

I would always start with a test/sandbox system and see how much time it takes for each of the following

H/w migration, SAP upgrade, OS upgrade and post upgrade activities.

Hope it helps.

Hi Johny,

This can be achieved in 4 steps

1) Migration from 2003 to 2008 : Install the target system SAP R/3 Enterprise 4.7 on Windows Server 2008 and perform

system copy

For details check the below link

Note : Iam not 100% sure if the above solution will work as i havent done it before

2) For Upgrading SAP to ECC6 Oracle version should be atleast 10.2.0.2

Perform Oracle Upgrade 10.2.0.2 on the migrated server 2008.

Note : We cannot upgrade oracle to 11g here as its not supported on SAP R/3 4.7 Extension set 1.10

3) Perform SAP Upgrade on the migrated server 2008.

4) Finally Upgrade the oracle database to 11G.

Assuming you have 3 system landscape this Project will run for a period of 10-12 months.

If i were you i would raise a ticket with SAP and get the roadmap from them.

Experts please feel free to correct me if any of the above steps are not correct.

Regards,

Ershad Ahmed.
