Hi,
to do very simple...
XI works only with a XML message. This last one is composed in two parts (*):
1. SOAP Header (with sender, receiver, interface, etc...)
2. SOAP Body = <b>Payload</b> = your data in XML format
(*) in fact, it's a little more complex, but for a 1st approach, it can be resumed by that...

Payload is nothing but the data(data type) provided by u
and which is displayed in XML format...
The payload is the actual contents (business data) of a message in the Exchange Infrastructure<b>(this is from the help).</b>

to see how XI messages are build
(their structure)
and you will know where's the payload section
