What are the steps involved in upgrade of SRM 4.0 / SRM 5.0 to SRM 7.0.

SRM 4.0 , SRM 5.0 upgrade to SRM 7.0 is normal onestep upgrade .
you can use SAP EP with SRM 7.0 or lean SRM its NWBC .

Navigate to SAP-SRM and then drill down to releases.

Just in brief, the steps which are involved during upgrade are ->
1. Install/Upgrade to SAP PI(Process Integration).
2. Import integration objects for SAP SRM into SAP Netweaver PI.
3. Upgrade SAP R/3 plug in.
4. Upgrade to SAP SRM Server 7.0
5. Uninstall the old release of SAP IPC.
6. If required - install SRM-MDM catalog, TREX 7.1
7. Upgrade to SAP enhancement package 1 for SAP BI 7.0
