Attention when installing hot fix MS06-040 (KB921883)

it installs a new netapi32.dll which badly fragments the virtual address space of a 32 Bit process preventing 2 GB applications (java.exe is one of them) to allocate more than 850 MB contigious memory.

3 GB enabled 32 bit applications may also be affected by this.

64 bit applications are not affected.

32 bit applications on 64 bit operating systems are affected.

there are two solutions :

1. uninstall KB921883

2. install KB924054

Please note -

MS have re-leased hot fix MS06-040 & the contigious memory issues should now be fixed, so re-download the latest version of MS06-040 if you want to apply it.

Hi Daniel

We will install hot fixes and patch Sets to one of the Application Servers on Windows 2003 Server with Itanium2 on 64 bits. And we have in the list the hot fix MS06-040 (KB920685 and KB921883). We read the note 663621 and 664607 and your comments. So in our case we will not have problems ?

And in the list is not the KB924054, we need to intall it too or just the other two ?

Thanks Peter! I was planning to install KB921883 into our DEV environment tomorrow. Looks like you may have saved me a few dramas.
