Hi to all,
I am installing mySAP ERP 2005 ECC6 and I run into troubles.
My platform is HP UX on PA-RISC, distribuited system.
When installing Central instance I get this massage:

Welcome to SDN
One of the pre-installation steps is create an enviromental variable called "JAVA_HOME" that points to the bin directory of your java installation. That will solve the problem.
In windows, go to System properties -> Advance -> Environment variables -> System variables -> Select new -> define variable name as JAVA_HOME with appropiate value.

Yupp I had the same trouble but on Solaris and DB2. What I'd forgot was to set the JAVA_HOME variable before I started sapinst. Even if I did set the variable and restarted sapinst it didn'r work.
Then I cleared /install/XX/XX directory and when I then started sapinst with the variable set it did work.

We had the exact same issue and after updating the 64bit java it was solved
Please check your version and make shure you have set the JAVA_HOME to the 64bit version
