The Strategy about SAPlpd switch to the new tool SAPSprint

Dear all,

We want to switch SAPlpd to the new tool SAPSprint.

Our SAP version is 4.6C. We has SAPlpd on our print server.

Our sap printing kinds are Front-end printing and Server based printing.

Our detailed plan is as below:

1 install and configure SAPSprint on another server;

2 remove printers(which access method is 'S' or 'U')

on the old server;

3 add printers(which access method is 'S' or 'U')

on the new server;

4 add method 'G' instead of access method 'F';

Then the SAPLPD on the old server will provide Front-end printing(access method 'G'),

the SAPSprint on the new server will provide Server based printing

(access method is 'S' or 'U').

So the sap printing will not be stopped for long time.

Our questions are as below:

1

Is our plan proper?

2

Especially the key point, will installing SAPSprint on another server affects the SAPLPD running?

We want to install and configure SAPSprint on another server first,

then remove printers(which access method is 'S' or 'U')on the old server,

add printers(which access method is 'S' or 'U') on the new server.

So the SAPSprint will be instead of SAPLPD. And the sap printing will not be stopped for long time.

3

The SAPSprint is is a server tool only, the Front-end printing should still be provide by SAPLPD, is it right?

Any experienced please give your advice.

Regards

Allen

Hi Allen,

It looks correct

Because of SAPLPD and SAPSprint applications will run on the different hosts, there will no problem.

SAP does not check whether SAPSprint or SAPLPD is running at the end point. So, front-end printing will work in both cases.

We have installed SAPsprint in same SAP server. It had been working o.k. until today. Due to some reason all the print jobs got blocked. The message in SP01 was u2018Output device unavailableu2019 . Once I manually executed the program all the print jobs were printed. Has anyone come across this issue?

if SAP cannot talk to the SAPSprint server for a period of time, then the printers are blocked (for around 5 minutes).

Have a look at point #4 of SAP Note#1069483 and investigate implementing the recommended parameter settings. Although the note is not neccesarily relevant for your issue the description in this point is relevant for whenever there is (even a temporary) communication issue with the SAPSprint service.

It is also possible for individual printers to be blocked for similar reasons.

Thanks for the note. Actually in our case the printer was blocked for more than few hrs. The printer was working perfectly. Actually the user was able to print the documents directly from PC. The issue was within SAPSprint. Probably the parameter rspo/tcp/retrytime = 1

might have helped. Since the printer was active, when I had issues with SAPSprint, it is bit confusing...
