I recently saw an official publication on SAP website where HANA database is refered as HDB. Based on my understanding after going thru different documentation, I think it is nothing but NextGen Improved BWA database.

HANA db is not just next generation of BWA. It has components of TREX indeed, but as well parts of P*Time and MaxDB: http://bit.ly/f5KCWL, plus lots of new development.
Hello Antony,
SAP used to ship the software under the name IMCE_SERVER (In-Memory Computing Engine), but recently this was renamed to IMDB_SERVER (In-Memory Database). My bet is that the name for the database software might change again any time.

None of both statements is true.
HANA database is s complete DBMS on it's own.
It contains of course bits and pieces of SAP systems that were there before HANA.
There's TREX, liveCache,Ptime, MaxDB - from all those you'll find something in HANA DB.
Sometimes it's just the concepts, sometimes there was even a code fork - but mostly HANA DB is a complete new entity.
Sybase does only come into play, when the replication is done with the sybase solution (which is currently not preferred any more).
More information about HANA can be found e.g. here:
