Using PI we can communicate via Proxy, idocs and RFC. In addition we can also use Web service adapter ( WS) to communicate between two SAP systems .
generally it is via IDocs, RFC. if you have SAP PI in place then the options are IDocs, RFC and ABAP Proxy
